$100 USD NL Texas Hold'em - Sunday, January 27, 07

You know that you are running bad when this happens to you within two minutes of the session starting. I had just sat down and posted

Seat 2 is the button
Total number of players : 10
Seat 2: fortknox13 ( $72 USD )
Seat 3: jan_leuven ( $111.20 USD )
Seat 4: boergy13 ( $98.50 USD )
Seat 5: AChobeA ( $127.93 USD )
Seat 6: KaptainKork ( $136.23 USD )
Seat 7: Mattie221 ( $52.19 USD )
Seat 8: Villain ( $102.58 USD )
Seat 9: TheFiscal ( $105.86 USD )
Seat 10: zahid999 ( $71.76 USD )
Seat 1: Hero ( $100 USD )
jan_leuven posts small blind [$0.50 USD].
boergy13 posts big blind [$1 USD].
Hero posts big blind [$1 USD].
** Dealing down cards **
Dealt to Hero [ 9◊ 9♠ ]
AChobeA folds.
KaptainKork folds.
Mattie221 folds.
Villain (16%/12%. Dangerous. Raise is not very meaningful with a poster behind. Could easily be a semi-steal like a suited connector.) raises [$3 USD]
TheFiscal folds.
zahid999 calls [$3 USD] (relatively meaningless. No stats on this player)
Hero calls [$2 USD] (I’d consider repopping a single raise from someone like villain.)
fortknox13 folds.
jan_leuven calls [$2.50 USD]
boergy13 folds.
** Dealing Flop ** [ 7♡, 8♣, 9♣ ]
Top set, dangerous drawy board

jan_leuven checks.
Villain checks.
zahid999 checks.
Hero bets [$12 USD]

So, pot-sized bet.

jan_leuven folds.
Villain calls [$12 USD]
zahid999 calls [$12 USD]

Action! Normally this just elicits a couple of folds and we move on, partuclarly when I have top set.

** Dealing Turn ** [ 5♡ ]
Villain checks.
zahid999 checks.
Hero bets [$57 USD]

Worries here are 76, 66, but if that’s out, players cannot afford to check. So I am fairly sure that I am in front.

Villain is all-In. ($84)

Bollocks, maybe I'm not.

zahid999 is all-In. ($57)
Hero is all-In ($25)

Oh well, I have outs if I am behind.

** Dealing River ** [ 6♡ ]

Puts straight on board. Two hearts or a 10 stop me from splitting it three ways.

Hero shows [ 9◊, 9♠ ]a straight Five to Nine.
Villain shows [ 8♡, T♡ ]a flush, Ten high.

Oh, for fuck’s sake.

zahid999 doesn't show [ 8◊, 7♣ ]a straight Five to Nine.
Villain wins $2.58 USD from side pot #2 with a flush, Ten high.
Villain wins $56.48 USD from side pot #1 with a flush, Ten high.
Villain wins $216.28 USD from the main pot with a flush, Ten high.

65% for me going in (1-to-2 favourite) getting 3.5 to 1 against. Sigh.

But, paradoxically, I was happy with the session. Given my poor performance on Party at $100 buy-in, I tweaked my raising levels. It’s still not a constant raise (varied according to position, stack size of the blinds, number of limpers, with only a fractional input from hand strength). Previously I’d had a prescribed raising level in full ring games from UTG, CO and Button. However, in the other seats I’d used hand strength as one of the variables. I’m still using it as a variable, but I’ve hidden it deeper in the mix and thrown in a bit more randomization. Just in case there are a number of players like Hector who are, indeed, taking notice.

I got back to $47 down. Pleased with my play this session. Once again, opponents not easy, but being awake makkes all the difference.

Here’s how the JJ hand played out.

poutier1234: Raise $31.10

Well spotted Hector. Any 10 is the nuts!

SS Fish: Allin $15.80
Hero: Call $23.10

As pointed out by commentators, I never considered folding here. In fact, I’m only 8.5% to win it. But the different stacks make it still right to call. That’s the point I was heading towards.

*** TURN *** [3◊]
*** RIVER *** [6♡]
*** SUMMARY ***
Total pot $84.50 Rake $3.00
Hero: wins $30.40 with two pair, Jacks and Twos
SS Fish: wins $54.10 with a full house, twos over 10s.
Not the hand that I was expecting….

++++++++

In response to Matt’s point that I was “wasting too much time on this”, I think you are under a misapprehension Matt that what I put in the blog consists of my entire area of study. As I’ve written here before, I think that many players fall into the trap first mentioned by Fox, in looking too hard at rare situations, without getting the important matters right (many of which have nothing to do with technical ability at cards at all). Table selection, mental stability, number of tables to play, how long to play, when to quit, when to start, what sites to play on. Then, pre-flop, flop, turn, river. And, depending on the time you play and on which site – heads-up play, multi-wayer play. These are the things I look at most.

However, by definition, the more common things which happen are less interesting. I could write about those, and end up with what many people suffer – a nil-response blog that eventually withers and dies because the og-so-sincrere and “sensible” blogger moans that “no-one ever posts a comment”. It’s a buit like the people moaning that news over-emphasizes “bad stuff”, and that there should be more “good news” stories, because, well, most people are inherently good rather than bad.

This misses the vital point that news (and hand commentaries) is only interesting if it’s something out of the ordinary.

But, here’s a hand today. I could have made this the main post yesterday. But I bet that most poker players would have read it and said “yeah, so what?” rather than nodded sagely and said “ahh, yes, that’s interesting….”
