The Party's over
Well, just as I am writing about what Party needs to do, it appears that they have gone and done it. The reason Empire only had 4000 players on it this morning was because Party has split from all of its skins.
To say that there are tears aplenty is the understatement of the year. Just as I open a rakeback account (well, a couple of weeks ago), the whole thing goes tits up!
And, of course, the skins have been hit by withdrawals on an unprecedented scale. It's a run on the bank, boys!
The sheer, unparalleled mendacity of it all is, I suppose, unsurprising. A lot of the rock multi-tablers who basically depended on rakeback will disappear. The VERY good players will move back to Party, because the rakeback was less of a proportion of their winnings.
But how it will all pan out, god only knows. This clearly smells of a panic move by Party. Whether it will be the answer that they think it will be (a return of the departed flock) is hard to tell. My gues is that for Party the move will be revenue-neutral, but it will eliminate a lot of the rock multi-tablers on the Party tables (since they were accessing it via skins).
But, let's face it, Party are scumbags, utter scumbags, the lowest of the lowest of the low. Any street cred that they had (which wasn't much) has utterly vanished.
The winners from all this will be Ultimate, Paradise and Pokerstars (and Prima, I guess). I can just about carry on at Empire at 3-6 and 5-10. No fish (well, not so many) but a lot of multi-tabler rakebackers playing weak-tight. These are a steady source of income.
I'm not sure if I am upset that I missed the rakeback party or not. On the one hand, it's just my luck, but on the other, it wasn't something I got accustomed to.

(Anonymous) 2005-10-09 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)Can the other skins survive? Is the money I have there safe? I assume so, given that Coral's name is behind this.
Have you seen anything about this in writing online? Can you point me to it? I can't find any press release about this.

The "New and Improved" Party
(Anonymous) 2005-10-10 06:10 am (UTC)(link)First off to the other poster's question, you can check 2+2's Internet Gambling forum for threads aplenty regarding this issue including some bullsh$t response from a party spokesman.
Let's note all the changes:
1) Screwed the skins' pooch and separated their combined player base onto different tables. One of my favorite hi-limit fish was sitting all alone on a 2K table earlier with no one to play with, showing the impact. Some european players who came in through eurobet particularly and are recreational players may not know they need to switch to party to find a game. Most of the skins' players will no doubt migrate to party with some to other sites. In particular stars had more plo last nite though not much of a boost it seemed in nl. Of course as you mentioned, this affects rakeback which doesn't affect me since I've never had it and don't pay as much rake in big bet as do limit players. This will however remove a safety cushion for lots of marginal limit players.
2) Added blackjack and stupid bets on the flop color. I hate this because I can't stand the thought of tilted fish spewing chips after losing a big pot on bj and not giving me their tilted action instead. At the 1K/2K levels I play, it wouldn't take much for such players to spew lots playing $200 a hand.
3) Now 10 tabling is allowed. I hate this too because it just means tight players at all games and limits will suck up more space and decimate the fish faster. I know that those who multitable lower limits for a living will like it and the convenience of not having to go in through the skins to get more than 4 tables, but this nonetheless sucks imo. This is easy for me to say though, since I generally only 3-table and only start a 4th one up when I'm getting ready to dump another table when the blind comes round.
In the past few months, I would say that almost 2/3 of my play is on party and 1/3 on stars, with an occasional game on UB when the hi-limits look good which isn't often. If stars now benefits from the demise of the skins then I imagine I will spend more time on stars. I've never had an account on a prima or crypto skin since I don't like spreading around too much. I am glad that more and more of my time has been spent in nl lately though since I think the most adverse impact will be to plo since it depends on more euro players who may have been playing through empire/eurobet. Since I dislike and don't play tourneys, I have no idea how all this might affect them, although I believe tourneys are a good draw to get players on site in cash games.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents. (Big Dave, if you read this, why not start a new entry on your blog on this as well and cut and paste my comments re plo and nl.)
