sigh. If only. I'm "crediting" the instability to

  • various betas of Microsoft development stuff;

  • Windows updates;

  • a dodgy fan on my graphics card;

  • undetectable spyware. or an invisible virus

  • the children

  • a build-up of dust on the CPU heatsink

I addressed the latter at the weekend, attacking the innards with a compressed-air spray. Most satisfactory: the machine stayed up for 24 hours without overheating, even when I gave it a purely diagnostic bashing at a flash games site. The graphics card is scheduled for downgrading: I don't need 3D power and I'd like the noise reduction I'd get from having one less fan.

I even seemed to regain access to USB storage, which was nice: I had a couple of albums to transfer to my IRiver, which had become invisible in recent weeks. Pam was close to killing me when the connection dropped 90 seconds before an eBay auction closed - one on which she'd been planning on "sniping" a late late bid. Silence reigned in our house yesterday evening. Apparently it was my fault.

If I could figure out the occasional loss of (broadband) Internet connection then I'd postpone it all indefinitely.
