I misplayed my favourite pair of threes yesterday.

I was one off the button at $5-$10 and, incredibly, got four limpers in front of me. Resisting my head, which was saying "Raise or fold, you dick!" I just called. Button limped, small blind inexplicably folded (K2 off, I would guess!) and Big Blind decided to raise.

Now, this was a tight player, and I reckon he would probably do this on AKs, AA, KK or QQ. But he might do it on AKo, and he might do it on JJ, TT, even 99 (I know that I would).

Cursing the fact that I hadn't raised or folded, I call, as does everyone else. This puts about $65 inthe pot.

The board comes J-5-2 rainbow and our man bets out. By this time, because I had missed my set, I had already clicked the check or fold button. But then everyone folded before me. Aaargh. And, after my fold, the button folded too. Big Blind must have thought it was Christmas.

So, here's the question. What kind of range of hands (and style of play) do I have to put Big Blind on to make it correct for me to fold? It's pretty conservative. Some back-of-the-envelope stuff tells me that if he would make this play with AKo, AA,KK and QQ, then I am right to call down to the end so long as the turn or river do not show an A or K. And none of this even allows for me hitting my 20-to-1 outer for trips.

Without running through the numbers again, I suspect that I am right to fold if EITHER he would only make the play with AKs, AA,KK,QQ, or if he is the type of player who shuts up shop immediately if he fails to hit. However, the latter breed are very unlikely to raise in the BB in the first place, so I would put a continuation bet with AK on a rag flop at close to 90%.

I put my +EV if the guy would make the bet with AKo as well as the top pairs at about $20. A bad fold.
