Got rather slaughtered last night. Managed 70th out of 72 in the Blogger tourney after I let myself get bluffed off a flopped straight (final board T966T). That took me down from 2800 chips to 2300. But I then got those 2300 chips (starting stack 2500) all-in at level three against opponent's 2370 chips with a board of Qd Tc 6c. He had Ad Qc for TPTK and I had Kc Kh. I guess I'm about 77% or so there. He spiked his Ace on the river. No blame.

Then I got a pair of Aces and Virgin crashed on me for the first time (perhaps this should have been taken as a sign). And after that I just got slaughtered. I find it even more irritating when I know that a few of the other players are plain rubbish, although the definition of "rubbish" at $5-$10, no matter what site, usually should include the words "aggressive" and "tricky". You beat them (eventually) by avoiding Fancy Play Syndrome (FPS) and by playing ABC poker with a couple of added spices. None of this worked last night. And, of course, a bad night at $5-$10 counteracts an awful lot of reasonably good nights at $2-$4. Slightly depressing.

I have to take the car in to get its wing mirror fixed today as well. Oh, and did I mention that sterling shot up another three cents against the dollar yesterday? Looks like I might be lumping in another monkey to stop myself being closed out.

But I did have a nice lunch at Chez Gerard on Charlotte Street yesterday. The staff were very pleasant and competent. The food was good but not spectacular. It only came to £35 a head, which I suddenly realized I saw as little more than petty cash. Gawd, a meal at a decent restaurant is now as significant to me as a meal at McDonald's was 10 years ago.

Generally, my typical Friday feeling, which is tired and deflated. One of the problems of not living in the here and now to the exclusion of all else is that, as soon as the weekend starts, I'm worrying about Monday.

Oh well, only three more weeks to a bank holiday weekend. Best to have something to look forward to. I'm wishing my life away.

I make no comment on the following headline, apart from the fact that I found it interesting.

The English-language form of this headline would be something along the lines of "De Agostini seeks further acquisitions"

La Stampa however, went with "De Agostini prepara lo shopping".

Does this signify anything? No. But it might be of interest to anthropological linguists.
