I took a night off last night. I looked at my stats and thought "fuck it, I've put in enough hands this month. Let's just win a bit and then have a rest". Which is what I did. Very relaxing.

The morning had treated me to yet another car crash in Trfalgar Square -- this one involving a new Mercedes CL500. It looked as if the driver was unaware that you could no longer go straight on past the National Gallery,,, but instead had to turn right. Net result, a kind of half-turn to the right and a rather spectacular impact into the wall, beneath the north-west plinth. I would have taken a picture, but I didn't want to appear like some roving ghoul photographing scenes of accidents on the off-chance that a relative of Princess Diana, or Madeleine McCann, is in the back.

+++++

I've also put in two tough days in the gym, mainly because these are the only two days that I will have the chance to get there this week. Yesterday's visit must have taken its toll, because I fell into a deep sleep when I got home. I don't know about these people who say that going to the gym gives them lots of energy for the day. It fucking knackers me.

+++++

I watched The Pledge last night, mainly because I respect Sean Penn as an actor, and he seemed to have attracted enough stars to this film, which he directed. Jack Nicholoson gives a strong performance, and the film certainly has an interesting twist, but he seemed to lack some sense of pacing. It was almost as if this would have made a good episode of CSI, but didn't really have enough meat to be a two-hour movie. Despite some creditable acting.

+++++

Terrence Chan gives an interesting tale of his problems with immigration and customs at the Canada-US border. I guess we forget that Canadians are "foreigners" too. I've never had any trouble getting into the US. But then again, I'm white, middle-aged, usually conservatively dressed, and probably look like the standard single white male visiting LV who is going to drop his wad either at the tables or in the bars. The Youngster was expressing some concern about what he should say if questioned about his occupation, given the recent David Benyamine problem (if you are a pro poker player, do you need a work visa to go to the WSOP?). I think that I advised him to say "retired investor of independent means". But then I remembered that "retired investor" was the occupation given by Himen Roth in Godfather II when he arrives in the US, just before he gets shot. Or maybe it wasn't. I haven't seen the film for a while.
