Now, you have to give Brian Townsend credit -- not for being a big swinging dick when it comes to high-stakes poker -- but in being willing to write about it when things go wrong.

Brian's latest tale - how a $900K Omaha bluff against Bobby "I Have A Bit Of Money" Baldwin went wrong - contains two interesting points.

The first (and we've all been there) was that if you are going to run a bluff, tell yourself at the start how far you are willing to push it. Brian fully admits that he played the hand badly, but the general point would appear to be that he got carried away with the bluff. If he had been playing rationally, he would have worked out what was happening, and would saved himself at least $600K (his final bet).

My biggest losses in single hands have been bluffs that have gone wrong rather than bad calls. You just get carried away and end up throwing in some humungous bet at the end in the attempt to "win back" the bets to which your opponent was meant to fold, but inconsiderably didn't. These days I nearly always tell myself at the start "make sure, if this doesn't work, that you give up on the river". That way you save more than half your losses.

The second interesting point that Brian made related to the game in Bobby's Room. Brian mentioned that it was an eye-opener meeting billionaires who just wanted a little action. He noted that, no matter how high he played poker, he would never be a billionaire, and that meeting these people gave him some idea of the kind of money that was to be made out there.

So, in a nutshell, balla-wannabes, there you have it. Even if you get to the absolute pinnacle of poker playing, a game in Bobby's Room that would frighten nearly the entire world, with pots of in excess of a million dollars, you will still be sitting there saying to yourself "hey, there's a bigger game out there. It's just that the rules are slightly different".

There's no peace.

Finally, GL to Felicia, who is in hospital at the moment.
