My American Roots CDs arrived yesterday, enabling me to sample the hitherto unknown delights of The Foggy Mountain Boys, Bill Monroe and others (includiong Mississippi John Hurt, not to be confused with the aactor, and Johnny Dodds, not to be confused with the Civil Service Mandarin).

One of the CDs is a double and the second disc has an odd collection of more modern stuff mixed with old material. "Deeper Well" from Emmylou Harris was a revelation. Why doesn't she play stuff like that when you see her on TV?

++++++++++++++++

I saw the last two episodes of series Three of The Wire this week, and my comment to my friend at work (we are sharing the rental copies from Amazon) was that it was perhaps the finest two hours of television that I had ever seen. I don't say this lightly, either. Perhaps Seinfeld at its best could match it, but not over two straight hours (without ad breaks). The Sopranos series three was also a masterpiece, I vaguely recall, but The Sporanos didn't have such a wide cast of characters, each and every one of whom was real.

The standard flaw in TV drama (and not a few movies) is that some characters are background, while others are little more than plot devices. It's lazy writing, but it's understandable, Hell, why give a minor character a life history?

But that's what The Wire seems to manage. Even minor characters have motives.

And, as if I haven't been spoilt enough this week, tonight sees a rare broadcast of Naked -- Mike Leigh's 1993 film that kind of made the name of David Thewlis. This unremittingly brutal film possibly features the ultimate anti-hero, but it's the filmic equivalent of unputdownable. A joy.
