An interesting e-mail arrived at work on Friday.
Hope you had a fruitful and enjoyable visit to RIMS again this year. James Tipping told me he saw you there and you mentioned that one of your Insurance Day reporters might be interested in attending the press trip to Gibraltar. If so, please could you let us know who might be able to attend.
Best regards

Well, e-mails from the "Ministry Of Finance", Gibraltar. Surely a con?

Especially since, if James Tipping saw me at RIMS, either he was hallucinating or I have Alzheimer's, because RIMS was held in San Diego last week, and I'm sure it was too chilly for San Diego when I got up.

But, no, it's all kosher.

I could probably lig this trip if I wanted. Gibraltar does a nice press jolly for people every couple of years in an attempt to boost its status as an offshore insurance domicile (particularly for so-called 'captives' -- those companies set up for tax and capital efficiency puroposes that entail internal insuring) and I think it's a decent enough trip. Since I'm off to Andalucia in August, it would be a nice prep for then.

I'll think about it.

++++++++++++++

I've worked out how to put ordinary earphones in my ears without them dropping straight out. I've also worked out how the radio on my mobile phone works (which is good, because the radio on my Zen is broken). All I've got to work out now is how to transfer mp3s onto it without paying for a bluetooth connection or bespoke hardwire connection. Why doe sthe Nokia connection have to be so particularly unique to Nokia? )Can something be particularly unique? No, it can't. That's like "giving 110%". Total logical bollocks. And, therefore, not at all out of place in modern text.)

+++++++++++++++

I really ought to mention Humphrey Lyttleton. It's a cliché, but I really think that they don't make 'em like that any more. Listening to his stuff in the 1960s you realize what a darned good trumpeter he was. His comedy timing on I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue was immaculate, and he was no mean caricaturist. It was impossible to find anyone with a bad word about him, when he was alive as well as now that he is dead. With Melly gone as well, it's a definite passing of an era. And, in a way, quite sad.

Anyone who saw James Taylor on BBC 4 on Friday would have been reminded of the passing of the years. It was bad enough when the stars of the 50s and 60s started to show their age, but when the stars of the 70s are approaching senior citizenship, it's all a bit worrying. The prime minister will soon be younger than me. Ugh. Still, it would be more worrying if it was someone like Gladstone.
