Some PLO humour
Jun. 14th, 2005 07:48 pmOK, here’s an Omaha hand that went right. After two hours of misery at limit, where I had gone from $110 up after 15 minutes to $55 down after two hours, with two loose-passive fish to my right, I wasn’t in the best of moods. I put myself down for the triple draw, but the six who were playing seemed set for the long haul, so I ambled over to the Omaha.
There was an empty seat at a game with some clear lovers of raises pre-flop (both of whom had more than the $50 max buy-in). Hmm, I thought to myself. I see potential for death or glory here.
Well, not much happened. I was pleased with my fold of top set on the turn when I knew the player on my right was betting with a straight, and I wasn’t getting pot odds (and he would have folded if the board had paired). And, generally, the right situation hadn’t arisen.
Now, how about this for proof of BDD’s principle that the game is about big decisions and, when you do speak, speak loudly?

Birks: Qs Ah 7h 2s
Birks calls. fallout112d folds. Asmodeus1 calls. Tghtgrl raises to $2.75. nivek22 calls. fitter565 folds. Flushola52 folds. Provee folds. ImaHotone calls. Birks calls. Asmodeus1 calls.
I wondered about this call, particularly since I anticipate a raise behind, but, hell, I can stand a raise if I am getting a number of other callers.
Flop: 2h 7s 6h
OK, I have top and bottom pair and a draw to the nut flush. But, more importantly, what can my opponents have? Trip sixes? A worse flush draw (I also have the Qx of spades as a marginal backdoor)? Or, most likely, a straight draw.
ImaHotone bets $2.50. Birks calls. Asmodeus1 folds. Tghtgrl folds. nivek22 raises to $24. ImaHotone goes all-in for $39.15. Birks goes all-in for $42.45. nivek22 calls.
Well, there’s a bit of speaking loudly when it matters. Before you click on the continuation below, have a guess what my equity is in this pot....
Turn 2h 7s 6h 3h That gives me the nut flush.
River 2h 7s 6h 3h Qc
That gives me the hand. Now, look at the crown jewels held by the other two participants.
Showdown:
Birks shows Qs Ah 7h 2s.
Birks has Ah 7h 2h 6h 3h: flush, ace high.
nivek22 has 8s 9h 5c 9d
ImaHotone shows Th 9s Jc Qh.
ImaHotone has Th Qh 2h 6h 3h: flush, queen high.
Birks wins the main pot $128.45 with flush, ace high.
Birks wins the side pot $6.60 with flush, ace high.
And my equity when I put my money in? 62%. Yes, I’m getting 3 to 1 for my money on a 4-to-6 shot. It doesn’t get much better than that.
Somehow, after a couple of hours of hell on the limit tables, it was all the more pleasurable. I really felt like shouting “Take that you scumsuckers.. Don’t mess with the Birks....”
But I didn’t.

62% very dangerous
Date: 2005-06-15 10:27 am (UTC)How about next Wednesday (21st) lunchtime for St Martin's?
Re: 62% very dangerous
Date: 2005-06-15 12:04 pm (UTC)As you say, PLO is swingy and I have definitely been on the plus side of that swing for a month. I mean, if you get two of these a night, and you are 50% to treble up, you will still lose your stack five times in a row a couple of times a month.
In fact, these games (on UB anyway) vary in the likelihood of finding such situations. More frequently in recent games (early evening my time) it's been a real tight bunch, and I've made what little profit there is to be had by picking up uncontested pots on the flop when I have position.

Date: 2005-06-15 01:07 pm (UTC)I had been sat there on 61% and couldn't believe it. When I can identify these situation better, then I'll feel I've learned the game.
