I love Glastonbury. For the past couple of years or more I have avidly taped all that I can of it. This year, thanks to advances in technology, I've gott all of BBC Three's and all of BBC Two's coverage, onto hard disc. So I can now spend a happy week editing it onto DVD. So far I've only seen bits and pieces, and most of it has been great. Indeed, it's really a matter of mentioning the groups who "pass me by" rather than the ones who I enjoyed. So, null points from Birks for Bloc Party and Primal Scream, and zillions of points for New Order, Rufus Wainwright, Garbage, Interpol, the hitherto not-particularly-admired Kasabian, and, best of all (of what I have seen), The Kaiser Chiefs.

Since I got the office computer back, apparently repaired, it has been doing weird things. I spent ages trying to work out what was causing the strange beeping noises when I turned it on, and then also resulted in occasional crashes. It seemed like an intermittent motherboard fault. So I hunted down all that I could, and found absolutely nothing.

So you want to know what it was? It was the "+" key on the numeric keyboard that had jammed down after its friendly plaster attack. Garbage Dell keyboards.... I must have come across the "sticky keyboard" problem at least four times in the past 20 years of computer use (the Amstrad's were particularly vulnerable to it), and it fools me every bloody time.

Please, please, please don't edit it yet. If I send you some recordable DVD's, could you stick the whole lot onto some DVD and let me have it. I would send you some but I've no idea what discs/formats are required as it's a technology about which I know nothing. I'll lop it off your enormous accountant's bill!

I'm glad to hear Bloc Party were pants, because we chose Doves instead who were, er, OK but nothing special. I did think it was just the conditions, but The Killers were excellent, if limited to their album. That might have been a good experience because the whole crowd knew the songs (always helps). The kids (2 x 15, 2 x 18) stayed for White Stripes who were apparently crap (Meg can't drum for toffee). I went to see Steve Earle who was masterly.

The younger ones said New Order were really good - "even the old stuff that everyone was getting over-excited about". The rest of us were off watching the Rilo Kiley (wonderful), The Earlies (fascinating from an intellectual point of view, just dull to watch live) and the Magic Numbers (who were abso-fukcing-lutely brilliant){is there a censor on these blogs?}.

Garbage we chance upon some of and I was really impressed. Always quite liked their songs but live they were really something else. Similar stuff to be said about Basement Jaxx who are 2D on record but a really great live band.

The younger lot went to see the Kaisers and were impressed. I was watching The Stands (quite good, no idea who they were), KT Tunstall (excellent) and Athlete (nice).

But the broadcast stuff solves out clash problems and means we could get to see the Interpol set that we missed in order to see Keane. I had planned to zap between the two (10 mins in good conditions, stupid on Friday/Saturday.

By "edit it down" all I meant was, eliminate duplication (lots of stuff gets shown more than once) and get it into roughly the right order (because lots of live stuff is interrupted for someone more live and more important, with the remainder of the less important live band shown later). Don't worry, nothing would have been deleted that wasn't a duplicate..


I mean, I can probably put together pure raw footage if that is what you want.

At the moment I am just dividing up the footage into more manageable chunks of individual bands. 'Fraid that the whole thing might take a week or so. I'll pile it all onto DVDs, finalize them and pop them in the post.

Well I'm old - I don't understand all this techy stuff.

And indeed - that's wonderful.

I have the majority of Glastonbury 2004 on video if you wanted to borrow and create, but of course video is really crappy to edit with in that sense. You more or less have to watch around 24 hours of video even to know what's there, although I did have an index to it somewhere.

Last year notable for how bad Oasis were, how utterly stunning Muse were and how singalong-ish Paul McCartney was. This year's effort in the same vein was Brian Wilson who I watched without adequate suncream on. As I said, if you're going to get sunburnt, doing in field watching the Beach Boys certainly has style.

I have much of 2004. I had to choose one channel or t'other last year, which meant I missed Paul McCartney and Oasis, but got Muse and Morrissey. Also gotSnow Patrol, Franz Ferdinand, Scissor Sisters, Damien Rice and much much more (three DVDs' worth, actually). That would seem to indicate about five DVDs' worth for this year. Should be fun. :-(

Just noticed a misplaced apostrophe in the first post. Must have been tired last night when I typed it.

I watched a bit of Brian Wilson yesterday, and when he did Good Vibrations, I just thought to myself. "I am lucky to have lived a life where this song was written only a few years after I was born" or something like that. That was one feel-good moment in spades. You were lucky to be there.
