Apr. 26th, 2006 06:36 amI do not have automatic updates installed on my computers. Microsoft lets me know when they are available, and, when I am in the mood, I install them. The problem with auto-update is that it takes up processing power and can cause havoc if you happen to have a particularly memory-hungry application running.
Anyway, this morning's optional update included one which ascertained whether you were running a genuine copy of Windows. If you aren't, it would "help you in the process of obtaining a genuine copy". Er, so Microsoft is saying "Hey, if you have obtained a dodgy copy of Windows on the fly, please install this update so that we know about it". Yeah, right.
It's not as if unlicensed Windows XPs are easy to do. You need cunning in resetting the internal clock, for a start. It's a lot easier to have a genuine version. But it's nice of Microsoft to try to get the customer to install an "update" that checks up on you, just in case.
