A strange month
May. 1st, 2006 12:50 pmI had a storming run for about 17 days this month. In fact the total win for the month would have been $1500 had it not been for a poor session last night as I limped towards whatever "Magic Card" prize Party might give me at 3pm this afternoon (EV, $20 or thereabouts. Expected return, $5)
I haven't included the number of hands here but, like the hours, it was down on March. Part of this is the undoubtedly regrettable tendency to remain at the table longer when you are slightly (but not too seriously) "stuck" for that session. If you are $20 up after 90 minutes, you tend to leave, whereas if you are $20 down, you tend to stay for another half an hour. Because I had a good run, I did more leaving after 90 minutes (as originally planned) than staying "for just another half-hour".
All that said, it remained a satisfactory month. $15.35 an hour is about as good as I can expect at the current stake levels. The volatility was low and progress was generally smooth. I had intended to make $3-$6 the major game this month, but then I went and suffered a serious dent last night on Party, which somewhat rattled the Party bankroll back to $1,200 -- which is a bit thin for $3-$6. I really want to end the month with $1,600 as a Party balance before I commit myself to $3-$6 and above as my sole game plan for the month. However, we are gradually moving up. There was no $1-$2 this month. I played a very short set of $10-$20 on Virgin because I could see that it was soft, but the altitude was uncomfortable and the slightest bad run could have seriously damaged the bankroll there (currently in the 1800s, I think). Virgin's problem is that you can really only single-table if you want to keep on top of the game. So, no matter how soft the opposition, your earn is immediately hampered by the fact that you are playing fewer hands per hour.
There is no doubt in my mind that Party is slowly getting overrun by the very tight grinders. The number of fish is getting fewer and you will often see tables that possess nothing but multi-tablers waiting for sets and fish. These players are beatable, but it makes for a grinding experience, in more ways than one.
