I don't know if it's me, or if performers can get more money elsewhere, but the current series of Later With Jools Holland has shown all the signs of being unable to attract acts.

Part of the reason for this might be that, with digital media making it much easier to rip stuff for nothing, performing artistes have had to return to the "bad old days" before recorded media was available. Yes, they have to perform for a living, rather than just produce something in the studio.

So, anyone who is any good, is out on the festival circuit, or is rehearsing for it.

That said, Kate Nash looks, admittedly just on the strength of one track, to have some songwriting talent. And it's hard to criticize a show ending with Patti Smith performing Gloria.

And there's hardly a book out there that's been released in the past month or two that I've been tempted to buy (with the possible exception of "Engleby", by Sebastian Faulks, but I may wait for the paperbacl for that). The music business seems far less exciting than it has for the past couple of years. New releases have been less than exciting, although I must put in a word for The National's "Boxer", which shows that their breakthrough album Alligator was not just a one-off for this Brooklyn (or is it Ohio)-originated band.

I've not bothered to catch up with any poker gossip this week. This morning was all a bit irritating. I went out to take the car for a drive (otherwise it would get towed away under suspicion of abandonment), only to recall that I had split off the car keys from the house keys. Pity that I didn't recall it a few minutes earlier.

So I decided to go to Tesco's instead, only to discover, somewhat surprisingly, that it was really crowded. Odd, since it was a bank holiday weekend.

Then I continued my poor morning (and poor record on Saturday mornings) with my worst performance on Noble in a couple of weeks. I got out of it a buy-in and a half down after 200 hands. The onehand where I was stacked off I shall look at again to see if my betting levels were wrong, and whether I could have got away from it or reduced my loss. I flopped two pair against one opponent, who had the flopped flush. These are tough situations when you are checked into, because any bet that prices your opponent's draw out, puts you in trouble if opponent has flopped the flush. I'll have to have a think about how to approach this, not uncommon, situation.

But, a Big Up for The Seven Ages Of Rock. Last week's programme on Hendrix was very well put together.
