Fun Times

So, I played some $200-max-buy-in PLO tonight ($1-$2) blinds. That was a bit boring, there being only one table available, so I played a $100 buy in table as well.

When I got to $300 down on the "big" table, I chuckled to myself "man, I really suck at this", but, a couple of hours later, it was back to a mere $170 down. And I'd won about $60 at the other table before it broke up.

Why so sanguine? Well, hell, 95% of my poker play now is at a game where I am working. There's very little fun involved. Sure, getting up from the table and counting the winnings at the end of the month is "fun". And it was a lively game, unlike the rock-fests found at the NL tables on a Thursday. Indeed, I strongly suspected that I was plus EV and that I had just got unlucky. Sure, I was outplayed on a few hands -- that's only to be expected. But all in all I held my own okay, considering I was playing at a buy-in four times higher than I had ever tried before at PLO. Kind of "God, you guys must be awful, because I know that I suck".

And it wasn't even a US-friendly site, where we all know that they fall in love with Aces and don't really understand the game.

So, I decided that, for once, I would play some fun poker, "reward myself", as it were, for another not-much-fun trip to the dentist. Tomorrow won't be so bad. And reward myself because it's a bank holiday, and because I've been working hard. So, if I lose $100 or $200 or $300. Big deal. Sometimes, it's the fun that counts.

That doesn't mean that I played deliberately loosely. It was just fun to play a bigger game, and to have a new intellectual challenge.
