Well, I'm off to Worcester tomorrow for a long weekend. The travel arrangements got a bit complicated. My plan to drive via central London was kyboshed by the "biggest street party this summer", which will be effectively closing off the centre of the city.
Then I heard that the M25 was as near as dammit shut and that there were roadworks on both the North and South Circular.
I calculated that it would actually be quicker for me to get a eurostar to Paris, then fly to Birnmingham, where I could pick up a hire car and pop down to Worcester. So I booked my tickets.
Well, that all went tits up when the fire broke out in the tunnel yesterday afternoon. Fortunately I was made aware of the matter, so I quickly booked a cheap flight via XL Airways. I paid with my Switch card, just to avoid the credit card penalty.
I was, as you might imagine, quite disappointed to hear this morning that XL had gone bust and that my flight would not be taking off tomorrow morning. But, well done British Airways! At the last minute they said that, if I leave straight away, they could get me on an indirect flight to Paris. Top ho!
It leaves from Heathrow to Paris (via Houston) in four hours. I can't see that anything else could possibly go wrong, so I expect to be in Worcester by tomorrow evening.
