A Pair Of Kings
Nov. 29th, 2008 04:27 pmI feel that I played this hand correctly, but I'd welcome different opinions. As per usual, you have the great benefit of hindsight.

OK, some background. Chris1954555 appears rather loose and this $4 raise covers a wide wide range. Not enough numbers on him to be specific, but let us assume any pair 5♠ or above, AK to AQ, AKs to AJs, any suited connecter 78 or above and about 5% elsewhere for "I came here to gamble".
Norbert 1953 is an unimaginitive German soul. Tight, predictable. Standard daytime fare. Not hard to beat. This cold call narrows his range considerably. Pair of threes up to a pair of Tens (say 50% of the time he would reraise Jacks, while he would always reraise Q♠ to Aces because there are so many players to act behind him).
K1n9_K0n9 is a different kettle of fish. This guy has imagination and a certain level of skill. Definitely a winner. He has probably made the same deductions as I have. This serves to widen his range quite a lot. I'll plump it as AA to JJ, AKs to AQs, AK.
So, given all that informatuion. What do you do? Note that Norbert only has $40, but the the remaining three players are more than full-stacked.
Hero raises [$35.50 USD]
Well, I'm not cold-calling this one like a pussy. That was the kind of weak-tight mistake I used to make at the Dungeon. So I have to reraise. If I reraise three times K1's bet, I'm putting $60 in, which effectively pot-commits me. I then look pretty dumb if loose raiser wakes up or if K1 reraises all-in. So, I rule that out.
There's a good argument for open-shoving, although the negative argument is that you will only be called by someone with Aces. However, I've been called with JJ, QQ and AK in such situations when I have shoved with Aces.
Then there's the mini-raise. Although this is a mini-raise to K1, it's not a mini-raise to Chris, and it's certainly not a mini-raise to norbert. My main line of thought here is that, given the stack sizes, I can still get away if K1 reraises again. He might be good, but I don’t think he's good enough to 4-bet me with anything other than AA.

Well, this narrows the guy's range, probably thinning out AQ, AJs, perhaps AQs, definitely AA, some of the suited connectors. I'd put him on QQ down to 77, perhaps AKs or AKo.

** Dealing Flop ** [ 9♡ T♠ 7◊ ]
With $110 in the pot, the hand now plays itself, wet or dry board. If the flop came Axx my position is tougher. Assuming that I will be called by any hand with an Ace, I need both players to have lower pairs (that are not Tens, 9s or 7s) about 45% of the time. There's some implied odds of a call from a lower pair or a drawing hand by the nutter (who presumably follows the rule of "assume opponent has AK unless there is overwhelming evidence to the contrary, such as his cards being face up") but I don't think it's enough. So, I'm shoving any non-Ace flop and check-folding any Axx flop.

Hero shows [ K♠, K♡; ]two pairs, Kings and Jacks.
chris1954555 shows [ 8◊ 8♣ ]a straight Seven to Jack.
chris1954555 wins $308.16 USD from the main pot with a straight, Seven to Jack.
So, lots of Sklansky dollars to me, with about 64% equity when the money went all in. Although chris could easily be called an idiot here (his pre-flop call with eights isn't quite there in terms of implied odds) his call on the flop is correct. He's got 36% equity of a $300 pot (and he might have 33% equity of a $400 pot, given that the player behind him might also call) for just $99.
The real debate here is, I think, what to do pre-flop, given one's knowledge of the players. I suspect that a pre-flop shove has slightly lower EV, and considerably lower volatility.
