Every time I buy something from Currys I swear that I will never do so again. It's incredible how they can turn shopping into an utterly dispiriting experience.
First it was a matter of trying to order the AEG fridge-freezer online. Currys puts in very big info at the top of its page "Free delivery and recycling on all orders over £279". Only when you click on "More Info" does it say that this is not available for orders delivered by the supplier.
No matter, I looked at the four AEG fridge freezers and, while two of them had "delivered by supplier", two of them had "home delivery". Fair, one might think, to assume that this means you will be getting the free recycling service?
Well, I never found out online, because when I registered, I first received this message "your postcode SE13 7**" does not match the one on our records of SE13 7**" (asterisks hide the actual code, but, trust me, they were the same). So I clicked "update profile". Then I was asked to re-input my password, and it told me that it was an invalid password.
So I telephoned customer support, and, as expected, there was absolutely nothing they could do about this. "All I can do is transfer you through to the sales department so that you can complete the order over the telephone", she said.
While going through the order, he said that "AEG will contact you about a delivery date". "Hold on, I said. the web site doesn't say anything about the supplier delivering this particular item. Does that mean I won't be getting teh free recycling".
"Fraid not".
"But nowhere in my ordering online does it say that your large headline offer won't apply."
Eventually I got a concession out of him that the web site was misleading, and he said that he would contact head office about it.
So, I'll have to pay the council to recycle the old fridge and freezer, which isn't much of a hassle. It's just annoying that Currys comes out with such shit on their web site.
At the end, I got my final strike in.
"Er, what exactly is Currys bringing to this party? I mean, your web site doesn't work and makes promises that it doesn't fulfil. AEG makes the product. AEG delivers the product. Whhat's the point of Curry's in all this?"
"Well, we repair it if it goes wrong".
Great, I thought. Currys' major selling point here is that, if they sell you shit, they will mend it.
Not surprisingly, I made sure that I used my credit card rather than charge card or debit card when ordering this product.
