Those immortal numbers, the frequency of Capital Radio in 1074 when it started, were uttered by Bill Mitchell. And Radio Four is doing a programme on Bill this coming Thursday.

I met Bill Mitchell once, without knowing who he was. It was at a New Year's Eve Party at Molinaire around 1978. I saw this guy appear, get himself the largest gin and tonic I had ever seen outside of my own kitchen, and plonk himself on a sofa.

This, I decided, was a man I wanted to get to know.

The gravelly tones of Mitchell were heard on many an advert in those days. "The Man Who Wrestled Pumas" (allegedly).

Brian Creese told me later on at the party that Bill was much in demand, hence his frequent attendance at Molinaire, but that all the companies booking him were advised not to make it for an afternoon. Apparently Bill's performannce could deteriorate rapidly after lunch.

I had my first genuine four-figure-day yesterday (not counting days where I have chopped it off in a tournament), winning over $1100 on Party and $150 on Pacific.

Surprisingly, it was all rather uneventful. It's just that you only have to run a little bit good at $400 and $200 on a weekend morning to rake it in.

About $115 in the pot. I had already built up some stake by attacking this complete donkey, whose stats were 95/36. Clearly most of the other players had little idea how to play this kind of idiot, and those who did must have got unlucky, because he was up to about $700 when I sat down.

The only takeaway from this hand is a metagame one. If you are sitting with a fish and you double-through, Don't quit the table. Positive EV is hard to find in full-ring tables at $200 and $400 buy in, so you need to stay while it's there. Only leave if (a) your play is affected by having too big a stack, or (b) you feel yourself getting tired and are unlikely to play anywhere near your 'A' game.

Opponent on this hand wasn't that bad, but I think he had misinterpreted my loose reraising standards (vs fish) at the other table as a Laggy style.

My reraise could I suppose be a squeeze play, and a shove all-in with AK against a light reraiser in the blinds is gaining in popularity (normally in the "raise from button, reraise from BB scenario). But this kind of committing reraise is normally KK or AA

Hero is all-In [$273.10 USD]

Villain can't really fold AK here unless he has me pegged as a player who would only do this with AA. If AK and KK are in my range, villain is basically getting the odds to call. If QQ or a total bluff is in my range, then a call is even more obligatory. But I suspect that player (in Canada, prob 2am there) was just getting tired and careless.
