A weary Outlook
Mar. 23rd, 2014 11:36 pmThe great thing about Microsoft Outlook is that it finds ever new ways both to infuriate you and to surprise you.
For rather tedious details I was trying to change the accounts on an Outlook that didn't particularly want to be changed.
I eventually managed to install the two email addresses that I wanted to install, but I made one fundamental error - I forgot to go into that hidden part of advanced settings on POP3 that tells the machine not to purge stuff from the server after downloading. Then, to make things worse, I managed to delete all of the emails that I had downloaded. Fortunately most of the emails will still be on my machine at home, and secondly fortunately, although my Talet and my BR.Com account lost all of the emails, my HTC phone seems to store them locally, so I could forward anything important back to my server (not forgetting to change the settings on the Outlook account, of course),
It took me sometime to work out why when I pressed "repair" and a test message was successfully sent, nothing would send from my machine afterwards. A close reading of the small print showed that I had to create a NEW folder based on IMAP. However, that didn't work either. I created a message, it went into an Outbox, but it wouldn't send. A few hours of moving back and forth, changing every setting I could think of, got me nowhere -- until, eventually, it worked.
I have no idea what the final brick in the block was that made everything run smoothly, but now it works, it works fine.
And the surprising part? Well, I couldn't work out why all my inbox was wiped, but then I couldn't work out why, when I installed my home email, a whole bunch of emails appeared in the "Sent" folder going right the way back to 2004.
On top of that, a number of "Bulk Mail" emails appeared that contained some useful emails that I would otherwise have missed.
So, all in all, it was a profitable exercise, albeit at times infuriating!
I might try to add the gmail account now, just because I think that I can!
