Dribs & Drabs
Jun. 2nd, 2007 07:02 pmOne of the penalties of making a mistake at NL is that you can get stacked off. Luckily the $100 NL looked abysmal this afternoon, so I played a couple of hours of $50NL.
Equally luckily, I didn't have a full stack.
But, well, you have to see the funny side.

If I had any handle on the raiser here, I might have reraised, but I knew nothing about him. So I decided to play the 10s as a middle pair rather than as a big pair. As a default range, I'd put the guy on AK, AQ, AJs, any pair 8s or better.
Matsist: Fold
gueneway2: Fold
noiq3443337: Fold
$5.75 in pot

My plan was to mini-raise quickly if opponent bet a smallish continuation on any board that didn't contain an ace or a king. The above board makes me think that I'm in front of more than 50% of his range.
Villain: Bet $3.00
Hero: All in $32.79
Whoops. Went to mini-raise just a bit too fast. On No IQ, the all-in button is a little bit too big!
There was now quite a long pause. Clearly if the guy has AK he'll lay down here, and I might even get him to lay down an overpair. As you can see from the above, the guy has flopped second set. Just my luck :-)
Villain: Call $29.79
Bollocks.

Total pot $67.83 Rake $3.00
Villain: wins $67.83

Long-term acquaintances of mine will be aware that one of the seasonings to which I am somewhat addicted is Maggi. This is ubiquitous in Switzerland and widely available in Germany. However, for me to buy it in London requires a trip to the Asian specialty shops in Lewisham, and they only sell the really small bottles. I believe that Sainsbury's used to sell the small bottles as well, but I never use Sainsbury's.
A couple of years ago I discovered that the Chinese supermarket in Lisle Street sold the large bottles for a fiver -- still twice as much as it costs in Hamburg, but about half the price, ounce for ounce, that I was paying for the small bottle.

It had always puzzled me that my local Tesco's, that sells a wide range of "ethnic" stuff, has completely ignored Maggi.
But, no more. God bless the Polish invasion of London. I was looking at the "obscure shelf" that carries foreign stuff that doesn't fall into the normal Indian/African/Caribbean sectors. And what did I find?
This:

And ounce for ounce it was as cheap as the large Malaysian bottle.
But, the question remains. Why on earth doesn't Nestlé just import it from Switzerland?

Maggi
Date: 2007-06-02 07:57 pm (UTC)NL moves and Maggi
Date: 2007-06-02 08:32 pm (UTC)When you make a "move" in NL, it is usually advisable to have more than just 2 outs in case you get called (not counting runner runner straight possibilites), and ones that can't be drawing nearly dead either. And if you are going to make a move in a spot like that, just smoothcalling and making a move on the turn often works better, as it looks like you either slowplayed a monster or just hit a draw. Of course when they have a set, nothing is likely to work. Also regarding preflop, I would often reraise a late position raiser when on the button with 99. But he is still likely to call with TT unless you make a huge raise which isn't advisable in case he has QQ-AA.
Re the Maggi, what kind of seasoning exactly is it?

Re: NL moves and Maggi
Date: 2007-06-02 08:38 pm (UTC)I wasn't looking to make a move. I think I agree that a reraise is probably best here, but I'm still playing around with various strategies.
This mini-raise on the flop (in this sitauation) seems to work remarkably well, because the original bettor nearly always flat-calls with two over cards, reraises with an overpair, and folds an underpair. So you find out exactly where you are fairly quickly.
A flat-call on the flop and a raise on the turn would probably be better at $100NL. Inded, I made just that play yesterday (although in that case I had reraised pre-flop, and I had Jacks rather than 10s).
Maggi is a soy sauce/monosodium glutinate combination, very salty.
