The first "staredown" I ever had was with Alan Betson. He smiled and said "The flop's over there son". I mumbled something about force of habit.
It staggers me how many players even at the highest level are fixated on the cards as they come out. One thing I will say for Robert Varkonyi when I played him, he was at least looking at me when the cards came out (I of course was looking at him). He (acting first) checked without looking at the board. I bet, he check-raised, all the chips went in, and I was a million in front. So looking first didn't seem to do me any harm :-)
