Films that you should not watch as you are preparing for your trip to Vegas:
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas.
When this was released I was still spending most of my time in a drink-fuelled haze; so, although bits of it rang a bell (the Christina Ricci part in particular, rather disturbingly. Go on, someone tell me she's a lesbian....) the film as a whole did not. But, in terms of putting you in a rational, +EV poker-playing state of mind, spending two hours waatching Johnny Depp impersonate the gonzo-meister is probably not the best way to go about it.
Great lines from it. "The good doctor never really agreed with the line, usually put forward by ex-users, that you could achieve better highs when straight than you could when stoned. .... Neither, (sniff), do I."
++++
Really must recommend The National's "Alligator". It's been a long time since the Feelies (nearly 25 years, in fact), but this Ohio/Brooklyn band are probably the closest you can get to an heir. Hints of Lloyd Cole and Nick Cave as well, plus some slightly off-beat drumming that adds to the overall effect. Abel and Mr November are the current favourites.
