December was an excellent month, considering the fact that I wasn't here for most of it. A gain of $700 or thereabouts (only $100 of it in bonuses) pushed the annual figures above $10K.
Now, one could feel depressed about this when reading that Ben Grundy chopped it off for £100K+, that Dave D won $35K, that Andy Ward won $17.5k. However, I'm not one for shooting at the moon. At the start of the year I was only aiming to win $5,000, so to achieve more than double my target is highly gratifying.
What's the aim for next year? Surprisingly, I don't aim to win more money. I'd rather like to win the same amount of money, but to play fewer hours. That would give me more time to produce Greatest Hits, read books, watch movies and generally live a life.
I also hope to be comfortable with playing $15-$30 by the end of the year. That means being able to cope with four-figure losses as par for the course (as well as gaining four-figure wins without letting the numbers take over my life).
Dave D made the valid point that a lot of winning is playing the right people at the right game at the right time at the right level. There's not much rocket science involved. Playing tournaments is pretty much a waste of time when it comes to my expected earn (although I note that a good performance in the Betfair "bonus" tournament has jacked up my hourly rate to about my average in cash games!). I've had my fun at PLO and I have no desire to go back to it. The same goes for Triple Draw. I might devote a few hours to low-stakes Badugi, but my main aim this year is to refine and improve that which I am best at — online Limit (or knitting, as Dave termed it).
So, I'm going to focus on winning, bonuses, the right games, the right places, the right times. metagaming things that increase hourly win rates. I've also ordered PokerPro, which will let me run some simulations. There are a few areas that I want to focus on before attacking the higher level games.
The other thing that I will have to do if I am to play at a higher level is research the opposition. This is easy on Party (bt then, they can research you quite easily as well). This leads me to think that Paradise might be a better play.
Predictions for 2006? Some of the high-stakes players will wonder what has gone wrong. In fact, nothing will have gone wrong apart from the number of willing donators shrinking. No Limit players in particular will begin to struggle, finding it ever-harder to locate soft games.
