Can we count on your vote?
Apr. 19th, 2006 07:15 amSomeone from the Labour party rang my doorbell last night. I can't ever remember someone from the Labour party ringing my doorbell. The Conservative party did once, in Dulwich, the night before the election of 1992 when it was clear that Tessa Jowell was going to win the seat from Gerry Bowden. The bellringer in that case actually had Bowden in tow, which must have been dreadfully humiliating. "You're going to lose, you know", I said, with some satisfaction.
However, since my move to Lewisham West, the appearance of any party has been as common as that of Halley's Comet.
So, why the sudden interest? Do they think that the British National Party is going to collect thousands of votes in the forthcoming local elections? Probably not. I suspect that they might be more worried about the Liberal Democrats. Anyway, the nice man asked if they could count on my vote on May 4 and I absent-mindedly nodded yes, not taking into consideration two important facts.
1) I never vote in local elections, and
2) at the last election I voted Liberal Democrat, on a "single issue" (and I guess that most of you can guess what the single issue was)
So, the guy happily went away with me as a tick in the Labour box, when it's far from certain that I'm a tick in the Labour box at all.
Just goes to show that canvassing and opinion polls are, when it comes to me, rather a lot of bollocks.
