"I forgot"
Jun. 15th, 2006 10:30 amA marvellously surreal news story this morning about a man being spared jail after being caught for the 30th time driving while banned . The defence? That he is suffering from dementia, so he forgets that he is banned.
The last time keith Edwards was stopped, when driving the wrong way (and, it transpired, in the wrong direction) he apparently also forgot his name, saying that he was Anthony Andrews.
Oh, and he didn't have insurance.
As dememtia goes, this is pretty hot stuff. Forgets his name, forgets to buy insurance, forgets that he is banned, forgets that it's a one-way street and forgets which way to go to get to the chemist.
So, what can you do?
Well, clearly the film Memento should be our inspiration. People suffering from dementia who are told by the courts that they cannot drive, should have tattooed on their arms "You are banned from driving!"
No excuses that you forgot would cut much mustard then.
