Future Shock
Jun. 30th, 2006 05:30 pmIf you want to break the US music market from the UK, surely there can be no better way than to have one of your tracks played in the opening "party" scene of an episode of CSI. So, step forward Middlesex's Hard-Fi, set to replace Harrow's The High Numbers as the hip sound of American 40-somethings who like to think that they are still "up with the modern sound, man". "Living For The Weekend" was the track chosen. Let's hope the group can spice up their live performance.

There was a moment in the Australia-Italy quarter final that I meant to mention. If anyone has it on DVD, you can see a shoert excerpt when Guus Hiddink (the Australia manager) does a distinct "I Squash Your Head" movement with his thumb and forefinger. (People who never saw "Kids In The Hall" will not have the faintest idea what I am talking about).

London Tonight had Alastair Stewart in an open-necked shirt. He looked awfully uncomfortable without a tie. One has to assume that this is ITN's version of dress-down Friday.

In the review of the latest Frank Black album Fastman Raiderman, the Sunday Times critic claimed that Black put all the decent stuff on the second CD, and asked: "Can't Black tell the difference between the filler on Disc One and the proper stuff on Disc Two?"
Well, it doesn't take much of a positive IQ to realize that, if you are going to resort to filler, you don't put out a double CD (unless you are The Clash and the triple album is Sandinista, but that's another story). You put out a single CD.
The odd thing about this was; I vaguely preferred the first CD, not the second one. Weird.

Tender Trap's 6 Billion People Summery pop for the Belle & Sebastian fans among you. The Automatic's Not Accepted Anywhere is quality but the appeal might pall. "Monster" is definitely a classic track in the making, though. I fully expect it to be the soundtrack to some advert in 25 years' time.
