The Beautiful South
Oct. 9th, 2010 06:54 pmWell, here we are in Nice. I caught the "later" plane, which just entailed leaving at 7.30am rather than 3.30am. The downside of that was that I had three less hours in Nice today. Since I would normally have slept for 90 minutes of that time, I guess that I lost a couple of hours net. A pity, because the weather was beautiful, albeit a bit breezy. And rain is forecast for tomorrow.
I'm in a very modern apartment about four blocks north of the old town. I like this part of Nice. It's central, but not the tourist centre.
Although in floor space it's probably no larger than the fifth-floor apartment I had in March, it's much better equipped.

The view from the balcony

I managed to do some shopping. I made it to Monoprix before closing nd then trekked through the old town in search of the postcard seller, but he wasn't here this weekend. Then I made it to Alziari's and bought some basil-flavoured olive oil to take home. I also picked up the requisite four postcards. For me this is dazzlingly efficient.
Nice seems to have imported some sand.

The beaches were not crowded, even though it was still tee-shirt weather. In Nice the season seems to "stop" at the beginning of October, no matter how warm it is. This doesn't mean that things shut -- mostly they just get cheaper. But it does mean that the place is distinctly less crowded.
Things forgotten. Head rest for airplane (I always do this). Both guides to Nice and the Cote d'Azur (removed from suitcase at last moment to put into hand luggage. Forgot to put into hand luggage. This would have been seriously annoying last year, but I don't think that it will be a serious loss this week.
The first real day of predicted good weather is Tuesday, although only tomorrow is likely to be really bad. The French are, perhaps predictably, going to celebrate this by calling a national strike. So, most likely no buses, trains, etc. It will be interesting to see what it's like.
Am still trying to get a decent photograph of me looking to camera. And I am still failing.

Am probably too tired to go out again this evening, but I might make the effort. A bientot! (Accents eliminated through laziness with the netbook keyboard. Sorry for alphabetic pedants. You know what I mean. Think of it as what I now call "Reuters online" spelling.
