Cold for London last night. I know it's cold if the supercharged Bently boiler is struggling to keep the flat warm, and it was this morning. Google told me it was minus 4, so I didn't even need to open the window to check.
I'm off to Birmingham in a couple of hours. Taking the laptop, although I doubt that the Thistle has got as far as a working Internet system. Any advertised wireless internet connection is guaranteed (a) to be non-functioning and (b) to have no-one on hand who knows how to make it functioning. So, I'm not optimistic.
Here's some hands, put together a different way:
One thing that worries me about the hand histories posted on blogs is that there is inevitably a filtering process involved. This struck me as I was reading Phil Gordon’s blue book of hands. Nice though the idea is, I fear that when you have 99, you will not flop 953 rainbow all the time (or, in my case, ever).
So, I decided to take a ‘difficult’ hand (in this case, JJ, 4 off the button) — a type of hand that you often see people posting “I HATE JACKS” about. The reason that people hate Jacks is that it tends to win small and lose big. Hands like (say) 87s or 66 tend to lose small and win big. Buit that does not make 87s or 66 better than JJ. Because JJ wins small quite often. You just tend to forget those hands. And, sometimes, JJ can win big.
So, how about taking my last 10 hands of JJ, 4 off the button, on a particular site.
Here they are, with occasional comments. If anything, it should show how “routine” 99% of poker is. These are the bits that you have to get right, not the “big” hands. Online, during the day, the big hands tend to even out. It’s in the chisslin’ that the profit is made.

Absolutely no reason to let anyone in here cheaply so that they can find a draw that is also a scare card for me. Jacks nearly always face reverse implied odds on the flop. A pot bet means BB will have put in $15 of his $50 if he calls, reducing his implied odds considerably.

Various reasons for this play, but the main one is that this is a perfect check-raise/go all-in on turn position for the big blind. Given the set-farming nature of the button, 6s, 7s, and 8s are the most likely pairs for him to hold. T9s is also possible. However, if opponent has missed, he might check. If button bets and Big blind check-raises, I am going to fold. Otherwise, I’m going to play it as if I have AK, because that is what people tend to put you on.

I like my hand here and there’s a chance I might fighten ratseht into just a call, even with an overpair.
ratseht: Raise $32.00
That’s horrible. Must be a set or Aces. Set would be my favourite.
carl2000: Allin $27.60
That’s even worse, although I suppose it could be a desperation draw. More likely that he’s fluked something good. Might be 87. Might be top two pair. Might even be flopped straight. I can’t see any justification for sataying in at this point.

Limper in front of me, I raise to 5xbb. Big blind defends. Usually a sign of a decent hand to defend a 5xBBB without closing the action. A♠ it happens (although I didn’t know this at the time), guy was quite loose.

Absolutely no reason to let anyone in here cheaply so that they can find a draw that is also a scare card for me. Jacks nearly always face reverse implied odds on the flop. A pot bet means BB will have put in $15 of his $50 if he calls, reducing his implied odds considerably.

Raise to 3xbb. Defended by button (19%/6%. Winner) and by BB (wide range in this situation because a lot of hands are getting value).
