For those of us unversed in poker-fu, hands 2,6 and 8 are interesting(ish).

Hand 2 looks simple. Why is thansen calling your (large) raise post-flop? There seem to be any number of hands within your range that would beat a pair of queens with the turn and river to come. Actually, I'm not sure why he bet $50 post flop in the first place.

Hand 6: well, you got screwed on the river, but I can't honestly see any way out of that. At a rough calculation, it's 85% that you walk away with the $500 here. A bit galling, that. I don't see any problem with your betting, but then I'll leave that to the more knowledgable posters.

Hand 8 is only interesting because you seem to know geijo69's range throughout, and geijo69 seems to know your range throughout. You're the one that loses the 50/50. And $500, which would give most normal people a heart attack. Luckily, neither one of us is normal, so that makes perfect sense to me.

Well, just comments from a poker ignoramus. You'll have to forgive me; I spent yesterday writing test cases for stuff written by a supposed electrical engineer who can't distinguish between amps and milliamps ... which is to say nothing of his highly dubious calculation of the resistance against a temperature gradient.

Of course, as a fully paid-up Oxford Historian (five quid for an M.A., guv, and we'll throw in the meal for free), I understand all this stuff. I even understand that an ADC (in this case, the thing measuring the voltage in digital form) goes from 0-1023. What I didn't understand, until I thought quite hard about it, is why I needed an ADC measurement of 500,000 to exceed the permissible current.

Anyway, fun poker hands; saved me plunging red-hot needles through my eyeballs. May I suggest enumerating each one in some manner, to avoid the need for commenters to increase their risk of RSI?

Thanks Pete:

I did thnk of numbering them, but just the work that I did (finding them, cutting and pasting them, getting the bold bits in, removing the actual hand numbers, etc, took me 15 minutes, and I thought that if I did anything else, I'd just not get round to it at all.

Hand 2. Some players just won't fold an overpair. I guess villain here is one of them.

Hand 6: This was the one where I was 92% on the flop and 90% on the turn. Galling indeed. Even on the river the guy has made a "value-shove" without the competence to be a "value-shove" player. Just stupid enough to see "Wow, I have a full house! That's good, isn;t it?!!" I seriously considered folding, but his range easily included a missed flush and, indeed, I thought this about 40% (with the full house being 55% and an obscure overpair like Aces as 5%) so I was getting odds to call. But, the guy made his mistakes earlier, so the theory is that I should always pay off to avoid losing hands to bluffs.

Hand 8: Basically, yes, we both know each other ranges and are betting accordingly. My river bet was really a blocking bet. A top-player sitting behind might consider value-mini-raising with kings, but my, in a ring game that's a tight one.

I could also try a blocking bet on the river in hand 6. Say, $100. He might, just might, only call that bet. But that eliminated my chance of catching a bluff from the missed flush!

Well, at least thansen clearly didn't have the obscure overpair on hand six -- otherwise villain would have walked away with closer to a thou, which would be even more galling.

Nice to know that I'm not making a complete idiot of myself, although (looking again at hand two) I'm still not comfortably internalised with the way this stuff works. Here's a thought. You occasionally recommend (or refer to) poker books aimed at the potential player. I have no interest whatsoever in becoming even an occasional player -- I have a friend in Dublin who will happily lose a hundred quid over a weekend to people he knows spend much more time at the game than he does because "it's a social thing," which strikes me as clinically insane -- but on the other hand, poker is just like anything else I know nothing about.

Basically, I have this nagging feeling that I'd enjoy being an observer much more if I actually understood what I was observing. From a social/philosophical point of view, this would clearly lead me to books by the likes of Alvarez. Any ideas on what author(s) would help a mere observer with the actual strategies (meta-game or not), implied odds, etc?

Wow, this machine is seriously hosed. I'm using Chrome just because it's not tainted with cookieware (ie downloaded a mere five days ago), and already it's chewing up login information.

This is getting as bad as online credit card purchases, which I'm beginning to think should only ever be done with one-shot authorisation techniques. (But what would I know? Six years' working for Visa, and I still got stuffed for £1500.)

Virtualisation, that's the way to go. Automate the thing so that it brings up a fresh new copy of XP Professional at 2am each morning, and deletes the bloody thing at midnight when it turns into a pumpkin with diseased rats attached.

I had to have a think about this, because I don't really read poker books any more, particularly the full ring cash type, because I think that they are virtually useless for online play. Having just listened to Andy (Ward) on The Poker Show, it occurred to me that you could probably learn something of online play by watching the sample videos at www.pokerswat.com. These are good because they help you get inside the head of good online players.
