Shortly before 1pm today it will be announced that either Paris or London will host the 2012 Olypmpic Games. The BBC News will then .....

Oh, I've already written that, haven't I? Well, what's 24 hours between friends when you are talking about a timescale measured in years?

I put undercoat on the ceiling last night, a heroic effort which perhaps might have better been undertaken on a day when I hadn't already been to the gym. My legs are definitely suffering for it this morning.

All of that left me rather unenergetic. I put in a noble 15 minutes on Party at a single table of $5-$10, but then two of the three fish left, and I was $55 up, and my heart wasn't in it. I often go on "manufacturing a win" sprees when there is no bonus at stake and when I have just had a loss. A bad habit, but I felt justified yesterday in that I probably should not have sat down anyway.

I affixed the new monitor, so I'm back to full strength now. I'm not sure what advantage a 19in monitor has over a 17in monitor, actually, apart from being able to sit further away from it. Now, if you increase the number of pixels...

Disaster strikes.

Oh no. We've won. Gutted. But at least there are a lot of miserable people in France right now. I wish the TV channels would stop showing scenes of grinning idiots in Stratford and instead focus on shots of Chirac looking downcast.

Bad day for Londoners. But at least the French are put in their place.

Monitor size important?

Most people increase the number of pixels displayed when they move to a larger monitor. If you don't, I suppose there isn't much advantage.

I've had a 19-inch (CRT) monitor for the last five years or so. A larger one would be nice but it's not a priority. I wouldn't like to go back to 17-inch, though I suppose I could manage.

19" LCDs are a con

I was looking to get a larger monitor, but when I found that 19" have the same resolution as 17", just with bigger dots, I gave up. 21+" are too expensive, so I bought a second 17" monitor and a hideously expensive (50 quid) card that drives two monitors. What I really want is a 17" that does 600x1200, after all they do that resolution at 15" for laptops. 19" LCDs? Just a rip-off, even worse than the wide-screen TV con.

i think that you mean 1600 x 1200, and I agree with you. I like my big TV mainly because it is 100 mhz. If it was 50 mhz the screen would just be too big for the resolution (in fact, at 100 mhz, it already reveals the inadequacy of the bandwidth on BBC3's coverage of Glastonbury).

But the 19in was as cheap as the 17in. Trouble is, the 1600 x 1200s 19 in monitors are still quite pricy. Not long now though before the price comes down.

Samsung seem to do a nice 32in widescreen monitor with 1920 x something resolution. Would look cool on the wall.

I've set my 19-inch Dell monitor to 1152 by 864 pixels, and I'm happy with it. Whenever it stops working, or if I feel rich one day, I'll look for a 21-inch (1600 by 1200) like I had at work for years.

Or, if prices continue going down, maybe something even bigger. I'm not currently playing any wargame, but for the times when I do, it would be nice to see the whole map on screen without having to scroll around. Having played board wargames long ago, I really dislike not being able to take in the whole map at once.

1600 x 1200s are something of a holy grail to online poker players, because 1600 x 1200 is the smallest resolution that allows you to have four tables on a single screen without overlap — a similar factor to your desire to see a whole map in an online board wargame. At any lower level, you have to use dual monitors.

Current prices: I see Dell UK is currently offering a 20" LCD (1600 by 1200) for £515.83 and a 24" widescreen LCD (1920 by 1200) for £856.58. Plus VAT, I suppose.

Oddly, it doesn't seem to offer anything bigger than this, and it doesn't seem to offer any CRT monitor bigger than 19" (though it used to offer up to 21" at least).
