My footballing luck turned to dust for a few days, so, in a spectacular get-out plunge, I bought goals in the Australia-Croatia game (mark-up pre-kickoff, 2.1 to 2.3) and, madness of madnesses (because it wasn't an in-running book), I laid Brazil/Brazil half-time/full-time at 1.8. My theory was that the Ronaldo pie-eating fest would have reached such levels that for the fuirst half Brazil would effectively be playing with 10 men and Mr Blobby. At which point he would be substituted and Brazil would go on to win eighteen-nil.

Well, it didn't turn out that way, and when Japan scored with 10 minutes to go to half-time, after the Japanese goalkeeper had played out of his skin to keep my bet alive, I started frantically searching for some kind of semi-hedging in-running opportunity to protect myself against the inevitable Brazilian deluge.

I found it by backing Brazil to win the game at 1.8, which left me in the odd position of being slightly up if either bet went wrong, and a long way up if Brazil was either drawing or losing at half-time, and then went on to win.

Well, the rest was history. Ronaldo decided that the size of his stomach was irrelevant to his free-heading ability, Australia/Croatia turned into a semi goal-fest, and the Birks losses at footy over the previous three days were wiped out in one glorious Miros-like get-out.

Meanwhile at poker, I'm in that dangerous "what the hell am I doing playing at these stakes" zone, with my session performances in the past four days at $2-$4 being:

$9.34, minus $54, $7.50, $41.25, $2, $11, minus $38.50, $12.50. Even the $5-$10 on Virgin has been less than thrilling. For the last six days the total day performance is:

$150, $53, five cents, minus $163, $6, $22. Yes, one day showed a net gain of five cents.

I'm now on holiday. The issues have been sent out today. I am a free man for seven and a bit days. I had idly thought of doing something nut-like, such as attempting to clear the entire Full Tilt bonus in a week. I might still give it a go. However, the flat really does need a good clean-up. Just chillin' seems a nice idea.

The St Martin's BA exhibition is open from tomorrow and I shall be popping up there for about 12.30pm to take some photos and, if anything really sends me, buying some stuff. It's the College of Art on Charing Cross Road (going northwards, just before Foyles on the left hand side). I'll have my mobile with me and turned on if anyone wants to find me for a quick drink or lunch.

The great thing about my flat is that you get entertaining views of life looking out front and out back. I mean, where outside of Cape Town on a sunny afternoon could you get this sight of a man who has had too much to drink at lunchtime, and so decides to have a nap on a four-inche wide wall. His partner had tried to persuade him to carry on up the hill, but had failed. So she went on up and came back with other family members/friends to encourage him to have a rest in his bed, rather than on a brick wall. Marvellous.

One of the guys in the office is out there at the moment, and Andy will be there from Wednesday, won't he? So it's not as if I'd be wanting for company.

And bokking the Ward tournament scheduled would definitely be a pleasure.

But I really want time to recover. I'm knackered. Flights to LV on Saturday there and back, cheap though they might be at £850 premium class, just don't appeal.

But isn't it amazing how things have progressed. 20 years ago the concept that I might be sitting here even pondering a casual "pop-over" to Vegas would have seemed as far-fetched as, er, well, whatevcer else would have seemed equally far-fetched at the time -- Rolf Harris and Bill Oddie back in fashion I suppose. I hadn't even visited the US before 1999, since when I've been to Vegas eight or nine times.

Now we seem to chat about going there with all the excitement of visiting Brighton. And the chance of us meeting someone we know when we are out there seem to be nine in ten.
