I really ought to be on my way the the Knightsbridge Crown Hotel to the launch of the London Poker Circuit, but I don't feel like going and, much to the possible humour of people who heard me proclaim that I didn't play such things any more because they weren't worth my while, I'm trundling along in a Frequent Player Point UK Poker League on Pokerstars. If I get eliminated any time soon, I'll stop the blog, get changed and head into London.

The Stars thing caught me because (a) I'm a sucker for poker leagues with cash prizes for your position at the end, as well as an overlay in the actual tournament and (b) it's a good way to use up some of my mountain of FPPs.

After Friday's near-$1k 'can do no wrong' session, it's unsurprising that the past two days have been something of an anti-climax. Indeed I managed a 200-hand sequence on Pacific without winning a showdown. That I'm still only five bucks down for the day is evidence that, well, not sure what, really.

++++++++

Richard Curtis' new movie on the pirate radio period on 1967 will of course appeal to "gentlemen of a certain age" such as myself. I still remember Radio London closing down and Radio One launching.

However, what I also hope that the movie will do is expose "friend of the people" Tony Benn as a total git. Benn, the then Minister of the Royal Mail or whatever it was called at the time, was the driving force behind closing down the pirate stations. I would like to think that God punished him by making him deaf in one ear, but I fear that it was more likely to be a genetic cause. When the likes of Jools Holland interview the old git these days, I'm rather surprised that no mention is made of Benn's actions in 1966/67 and how this squares with his current "defender of the people" and saint amongst the Hoxton Set reputation.

Benn has always been that peculiarly English type of revolutionary, right the way down to the comfortable sweaters and the cups of tea. Genuine revolution frightens the shit out of him (as it would Michael Foot), which is why both of them like to watch it at a distance of, say, 300 years or so, when it's quite safe to support it. Much of this is based in the roots of our Labour Party in methodism and non-conformism.

And that's it, shoved Q9 and managed to find AA, out in 34th with 27 places paid. So it goes. I shall try to live without winning a dollar for 34th place. A rather meh tournament, actually.
