Good ol' Vista

There are some nice things about Vista. I like the default desktop news and weather stuff, if only because it tells me how cold it is outside.
However, there appears to be occasional 'lag' when clicking the mouse and, more irritatingly (at the moment), the 'active' part of the pointing appears to be a fraction of an inch above where I would expect it to be. This has made resizing windows a bit hit-and-miss, and clicking on poker boxes has sometimes not worked (leading to me being timed out).
A second problem with Vista is clearly related to its networking and privileges. Pokertracker needs to be "run as administrator", and last night it worked fine with GameTime+. However, this morning, GameTime+ just didn't want to work with Pokerstars. It recognized that I was at the table, but wouldn't generate any stats either on the table or in its own message box.
It turns out that you need to head into "advanced" settings in GameTime+ to click the box "run this as administrator" as well. Of course, in the good old days, everyone who had a PC was the "administrator". But now it appears that the defauilt is "unprivileged moron who can't be allowed anywhere near any but the simplest tasks. I foresee a number of programs where this 'get-around' will be necessary.
On the plus side, now we are rocking when it comes to displays:

Working with Vista means you never have to step outside
Date: 2007-10-27 05:34 pm (UTC)Or you could look. When God invented Windows, back around the seventeenth century, He didn't require you to shell out a hundred quid for each licensed copy -- although, admittedly, the British government did.
And what's more, the original Windows were instantly 3-D! No twenty year wait for God; oh no. He did things properly back then. ("That'll be six days, mate. Sorry, union rules mean I get the seventh one off.")
And it didn't matter, back then, if your house was under-powered. No need to turn the 3-D capability off, just so you can run a nice plywood fire in the corner of your hovel.
Vista is spavined muck. Turn it off now, before you've invested too much energy and time and love and precious bodily fluid in it, and go back to XP.
That was a nice image though ... Birks in a bath-chair, with a Burberry tartan rug over his knees, tapping away at his computer and asking "Is it 25 degrees out there yet, or should I just take my medication and stay indoors, like dr.singh.med.uk tells me to?"
