St Martin's Exhibition
Jun. 29th, 2008 05:13 pmOK, I finally got round to this, partly because I ought to be doing a six-monthly summary of my poker performance, and that's even more hassle than this.

An interesting piece in a year dominated by paintings.

Johan Andersson, "Anna". A large piece. Portraiture/relatively realistic interpretations were also back in fashion.

Morgan Mia: Warning (1). Use of light behind picture. Gilbert & George have done this and I aalso remember an exhibition in Hamburg at the start of the decade that used a similar technique. Impressive, but could one have it on a living room wall?

Morgan Mia: Warning 2. Disturbing, evocative, memorable.

Jia Jia Wang: The Known Unknown. Don't see much of this watercolour style at undergrad exhibitions. Quite commercial in its own way.

Ruth Angel Edwards: "Side By Side We Exist As Potential. Let Us Leap Into The Arms Of The Future Together!"
A huge piece, presumably of undergrad friends, with a title to match. Great fun, and I liked the willingness to go for primary colours.

Mike Fox: Tourist 1
First of two by this painter: Achieves the difficult task of making Milton Keynes look interesting.

I would think about buying this guy's stuff.

Yuko Ogue: Wisdom of Love.
Dark: Also strangely unsettling. Admirable.

Ashley Jahncke: Untitled
My favourite piece. Jan's comment was "Please don't buy that. It reminds me of one of my bad dreams". So it goes.

Manike Anne Stevens: City Escape:
Technically good. Not sure if the picture has the depth for me to want it as a permanent piece.
______________________

Paula Day: "Shift Change"
Brilliant. A large piece. More of the same and Paula Day surely has a future in the galleries. If one kind good painting tells a story, then this is a good example of that style.

Azalea Azman: Untitled
Jan's favourite piece. It was getting a bit late by this time, so the light isn't as good as I would have liked (memo to self -- adjust camera settings as it gets later....). It looks better in real life.
