6-max

It's weird: you only stop playing for three days and you go rusty. Four-tabling, which seemed to be something that I could do in my sleep (8-tabling was beginning to look possible) suddenly became a challenge.

It will all come back soon enough, but I think that it is evidence of how, if you want to win at online poker, 90% of the game is just "keeping at it". Practise, practise, practise, and when you aren't practising, think about things.

I dabbled at 6-max today, mainly because I thought "hell, I'm up enough this year and this quarter -- you have to give this a go someday".

Volatility is clearly higher and I am still miles from being "in the zone" when it comes to autoplays. Here are two hands that went well and two that didn't.

((Note. Google Chrome seems to misinterpret my Hearts as that odd mathematical symbol of "super-equals" (or maybe an I-Ching sign). I'm not sure how it will come out on the web)

The entire hand went according to plan, really. The check on the turn and the "block-bet" on the river was just sufficient to suck in a typical TAG reg at this level.

I've got a bit of this flop. I might end up betting the river for value; I might end up betting it as a bluff if opponent gives up after is (probably inevitable) bet on the turn. Two ways to win.

It's important here to "smooth-call" in online terms, as if you hadn't considered any other play.

This is a bad bet. Opponent clearly has a piece of this board. They won't fold a pair when the board is a collection of shit. I have no escape route bar hitting a pair (and even that might not be good enough) and I'm OOP. I should give up meekly and check-fold.

Hatti777 calls [$86 USD]

Oh well, at least I didn't push it too far. Just because I only have one way to win is no reason for lsing any more money than necessary.

Hatti777 shows [ 7♠, A♠ ]a pair of Sevens.

The hand below was my toughest decision. At full-ring the fold is automatic, but it's much mmore marginal here.

Not really what I was expecting, and a little bit disconcerting.

HERO bets [$25 USD]

Even more disconcerting. Trips is hard to fold in a 6-max game, but I'm now only beating a bluff. At a higher level I might just read opponent for a bluff, but at this level the semi-bluff check-raise doesn't tend to be set at such a "tempting" amount. But I might also have outs against a flush or a straight. Then again, I might be drawing to just three outs or perhaps even none. All in all, I think I'm up against a monster here (I think he would have bet out with a flush or a straight), either AA or QJ. But I'm not happy either way. I decide that discretion is the better part of valour/
