The doomed location
Jul. 21st, 2005 07:15 amThere is a famous episode of Seinfeld with Babu, the restaurateur who opens up in a location where many have tried before and failed.
There are two such locations on Wardour Street. One is next door to Mezzo, which has spent more time boarded up than serving food in the four years that I have been walking up that street on the way to work. First it was a salad bar, then it was "Tiffin Bites", and soon it is to be "Hummus Bros". You can imagine the optimism. Next door to Mezzo, prime location in the middle of Wardour Street. How can it fail? Darned if I know, but doomed it is.
The other "see you in bankruptcy court" location is 139 Wardour Street, slap bang opposite Busaba Eat Thai, probably the busiest restaurant on the street. But 139 (currently called "139") never hacks it, be it Indian, French, a brasserie, or a Caribbean food joint. I suspect that it's something to do with the layout. The stairs to the basement are at the front of the restaurant, forming a psychological barrier to anyone wanting to get in (or out).
And yet some other locations, such as a narrow little closet a bit further up the road, do a storming trade.
Location can be a puzzle, that's for sure.
