Bring on the grimmness :-)

I thought that I was the only player at this level who did this in the small blind (just played Sklansky Chubukov against the BB). This is the first guy I’ve come across who does the same.

Oh bollocks. This is either a set, or another made straight (probably with a spade) or a made flush without the Ace. E.g, he might defend with 8♠ 7♠. My gut feeling is that this is a set.

Well, if he has a set, I’m favourite, so I should go all in. If he has top straight with a spade, I’m fucked. If he has two small spades, I might get him to fold here.

A set farmer fooled me in the hand below. I really thought his bet was on a draw (say A♣ K♣) and that he would have taken it more slowly with a set (most players at this level do). Perhaps I should have folded. I can’t make up my mind on this one, but “Big Bets mean Big Hands”. I had only just sat down, so I got caught cold...

Date: 2007-08-20 12:42 pm (UTC)Obvious hands he might have, if not a flush, are a set (33% EV), bare As or Qs (40% EV), or As/Qs and a pair (42% EV). Occasionally he'll be bluffing with 9h9d or something but at this level with his stack size I would agree that this chance is very small. I was going to say shove flop, and its profitable, but he will always call and be correct to do so. Your profit on the hand will be ~60%*198 - 97 = 22.
The problem with calling is if the board pairs on the turn. If you check then flush draws can take a free card and still bluff you on river if they miss. If a spade comes and you bet allin then he can fold sets with a clear conscience and call with flushes. It seems too easy for you to be wrong-footed if you call. It seems to me that he's winning all the cases he would've done before plus bluffing you off paired boards. And in any case your psychic "He has a set therefore i shove spades but not paired boards" is somewhat illogical. You might as well say "He has a flush draw therfore i shove paired boards but not spades". You can't know.

PS (I can get away from AA given stack sizes in the last one, and please re-raise KK pre-flop)

Date: 2007-08-20 01:14 pm (UTC)I think I also agree with a re-pop pre-flop with the KK, although once you get to this situation, I need more of a feel for the right amount (assuming that the effective stacks are not very deep).
I assume that I want it to be not too much (else only a better hand will call). Is a mini-reraise or 2.5 okay here? 3 x the reraise looks to be almost pot-committed if he calls. Which I guess is what I want, or is it? I don't mind him being pot-committed if I'm in front on the flop, (at least 2/3 of the time, I guess, assuming opponent doesn;t have AA) but I don't want it if I'm behind.
Yes, I think that a reraise of about 2.5, given the stacks, feels about right.
On your first para, given his line, what is he likely to have? By which I mean, how do the probabilities play out on his range?
Your first para approaches the probability from the point of the player who makes a big call on the river when opponent only had one out, therefore there was only one chance in 45 that he was winning. Unfortunately, the bif bet made by opponent negates those odds.
But, despite that confusion, I take your point. Given opponent's range of hands, I gain nothing from calling rather than raising the flop except in the "but it turns out that...." mode. If he has the set, he will call my all-in on the flop, and he may win (whereas "it turned out that...." he folded and I won), but I'm the favourite if he has a set.
Small flushes are definitely less likely, because he's called the raise.
I did say that "I got lucky". I wasn't happy with my play at the time and felt that I should have reraised pre-flop. Unfortunately the rules don't allow me to say on the turn; "hold on, can we go back a card", so my all-in was something of a bet born out of "well, maybe this is how it went down".

Date: 2007-08-20 06:32 pm (UTC)So if you only re-re-raise with AA or KK an astute opponent can call with a lower pair even without correct odds to hit a set because if an Ace comes it's far more likely you have KK (~3-1) and he can force you off KK. Lindgren has the suggestion you put in the 3rd raise with AA and KK but sometimes AK too (perhaps AK suited). It's some defence against people trying to frighten KK post-flop.
